We want control.
It keeps us from feeling overwhelmed and anxious.
But guess what.
Uncertainty is the only sure thing.
We have no idea what will happen next.
We pretend we do, but we don’t.
Jobs change
Kids grow up
People leave
Life keeps shifting.
Not knowing is brutal.
But if we stop fighting it—if we learn to be okay with not knowing—we free up energy to engage in life right now.
But it's hard and takes practice.
We're wired to want control.
Step. Step. Don’t Know.
I heard this years ago from my yoga teacher, Beryl Bender Birch.
It stuck with me.
I say it out loud. It calms me.
It reminds me to stay engaged in life—now—and that trying to guess the future is a waste of energy.
It works.
Try it. Be patient with yourself.
Let me know how it goes.
