Powerful reminder. It's so easy to get in a hurry for .... what? A hit of dopamine for checking a notification or doing something "productive"? Glad you were able to BE THERE
I remember when my mom was in nursing care. She wouldn't be able to see me until around 9:30. So I made myself get to 6am yoga. Showered, ate and then went to see her. That way I was fully there for her. I was grounded and present for her. I am thankful for those visits.
Mary, that is so lovely. You took that time for you so that you could be there fully for her. What a perfect balance. I often go to the gym by my mom's class for that reason. It settles my nervous system so that I can be fully present. Thank you for sharing.
Cara, I'm reading this and I can so relate to this except mom's not doing quite as well as your mom. Mom's 86 but a lot of health issues. The thing about time is that we never get it back and when it's gone, it's gone in 2021. I left my nursing career as a travel nurse mail in intensive care units after she spent 10 days in the ICU with me not leaving her side for one second (also fired two intensive care doctors who didn't know what they were doing). Brought her home, not knowing all the things that we're coming in the following years, more surgeries, etc. I'm still working at the VA but I was working from home during Covid for community care and put my office next-door over at her house trying to take care of her and I just felt like I couldn't give her the amount of care that I feel like she needed as I would for any patient and I didn't want to rob any time from where I worked . My mom always taught me that she's a New Yorker and she said when you're working you work and if you don't, you're stealing from the company, so that was instilled at a very young age. but I did walk away from a considerable amount of money. I wasn't anywhere near retirement age, but I catch some things out and decided that time was more valuable than money can always make money, but you can never get any of the time back so here we are three years later and she's declining more memory mobility all those things but I live next-door on 10 acres in the country in Florida and I'm here for her and my stepfather whatever they need
Enjoyed reading your article and just wanted to say nice to meet you 🤗💕🙏
Yes! Family obligations, papers due, teaching schedule , wash ....where do i begin? I usually start with a list of today only and a second lis tof week ahead. This helos me sort what I dont need to do or think about right now.
Thank you for the perfect reminder, Cara! We do not get the time back. Being present in each moment vs allowing our movie-reel of a mind to run 24/7, is a gift to ourselves and others. In those tiny spaces we can feel connected to something much bigger through our hearts and sensory intelligence. 🙏🏼

Gosh, I know. Yet my busy self really wanted that hit of dopamine! So glad I heard the whisper. Thanks for your wise words.
