Live in your head all day and you lose touch with what’s real.
You move through life disconnected from your body.
You become like a brain on a stick.
I’ve seen it with athletes, CEOs, and busy people like us.
It’s not optimal.
There’s a fast way back to feeling grounded.
Feet planted. Eyes steady.
I first taught this to the Villanova University football team (I was their mental strength coach). The team used it like a mantra to reconnect with their focus.
Here’s what you need to know:
Your body lives in the now.
It senses life directly—pure knowing, no thinking.
So when you feel your feet and set your gaze, it snaps you back.
It anchors you.
You feel more stable. Less scattered.
This works on the field.
It works in meetings.
It works when your kid melts down and you want to scream.
Feet planted. Eyes steady.
A simple shift. A real reset.

My sponsor always says to me your feet are where there supposed to be.
This brought to mind something ancient and striking: during Roman triumphal parades, when a general returned victorious, a slave would stand behind him in the chariot and whisper, “Memento mori”—remember you will die. A reminder, in the height of glory and adoration, of his mortality. That he was not a god. That life is fleeting. A grounding gesture, much like "feet planted, eyes steady"—pulling us back from ego, distraction, or overwhelm, and anchoring us in the present with humility and clarity. Fantastic post.
